Talk projection with Christopher de Béthune

(French)

Christopher de Béthune is a Belgian photographer whose images and landscapes in black and white are witnesses of sadness, comfort and nostalgia.

Veiled in a dark romanticism, his work has been described at once impulsive and other times prudent but always with notes of melancholia and solitude, inviting the viewer to travel and abandon.

Japanese cinema has had a big influence on the artist's work.

Presentation of the book "Tant de poussière, et moi si sourd" by Antonio Jiménez Saiz (BE)

"Tant de poussière, et moi si sourd" is an epic matured in the daily silence where words give themselves to meditate. If the disease is an exile from oneself, being bipolar is a shipwreck where every day raises mourning on the beauty of the world. This is not a medical book, the drugs are already enough, it is a book where melancholy is expressed in the body in molasses, frail, of all shades and colors.

After the publications of Elite Controllers (2016) and No nos aprenden a morir (2018) Antonio Jiménez Saiz, self-taught Belgian photographer will come to present his third and last chapter "So much dust, and me so deaf", a series all in depth in his inner world.

Artist Talks Lionel Jusseret KINDERSZENEN

Kinderszenen reveals the intimacy of autistic children, their way of seeing space and the world. He paints a portrait of so-called "autistic" children during their vacation in the countryside. Far from the violence of the walls, this book is a dreamlike and mysterious, sometimes naive, journey which lets you discover the enigma of these "kids".

In 2012, Lionel Jusseret began photographing children with autism after two years as an educator with the J’interviendrais association, which offers children with profound autism the opportunity to enjoy community holidays in different country houses. Lionel Jusseret will come and talk to us about Kinderszenen on Thursday, October 15 at L'Enfant Sauvage, also an opportunity to discover the book and have it signed by the artist!

Release of the Book "Jihuay" by Tom Lyon

Jihuay is a story with its fair share of unanswered questions. A sort of initiatory journey as many have been able to take, with the idea of giving meaning to things, finding solutions to problems. In the end, the important thing is not a so-called truth or answer that I could have gotten from this trip. What is important to me is to show you what is left of it, to make my universe concrete, with all the faults that it can contain and to arrive over the pages to provoke tensions, like those that I could feel.

Sunday April 11 & Sunday April 18 - 14:30  16:30

Les Canoglyphes / Canette engraving workshop with Luka Rakol

Luka Rakol today questions the origin of language, in this case written.

What is more in a context of mixed social and cultural relations. Language is so often an obstacle to reaching out to others.

Luka remembers his disappointment when he learned that there was no such thing as a universal sign language but that there were as many as there are spoken languages, if not more! Yet he saw the perfect opportunity to think about the utopia of a world language. But words derive from thought, and the uniformity of a vocabulary would mean equally uniform thought. It is in the plurality of interactions that our richness resides, and it is our ability to understand it that is the basis of our progress as a species.

Luka Rakol likes to think of artistic expression as a language in itself. So everyone has their own language. Buried under rules of syntax and grammar.

Long before our first mimetic “Papa” or “Maman”, there is a Man who, 600,000 years ago, had fun carving a zig-zag on a seashell. Why?

Nowadays, the seashells of our ancestors could be cans ....

What would we engrave there for posterity?

Originally from Toulouse, Luka Rakol joined the ABKA workshops in 2018 to learn printmaking from Cyril Bihain and Wilfried Pulinckx. After a residency at the Maison des Artistes in Anderlecht, he exhibited the same year a series of can engravings similar to old papyrus in which Luka Rakol tried to develop a new, evolving language, between automatic writing and anachronistic references. In 2019, he was admitted to sculpture at the Royal Academy, under the direction of Lucie Lanzini. In parallel with his studies, Luka Rakol continued his in-situ practice, painting bulky items along the sidewalks, thus foiling the usual street-art codes and with his collective Freskolab won his first public commissions.

Workshop Cyanotype with Toinette Chaudron

This practical workshop aims to initiate the cyanotype process, one of the oldest photographic processes (1842). We will start from digital images that we will transform into negatives (or the possibility of bringing your negatives) on tracing paper, in order to make cyanotypes. You will also learn to prepare the chemicals, to apply the emulsion on the paper, to evaluate the exposure times.

Presentation of the book Eugénie by Mélanie Patris

EUGENIE

"The journey that this series depicts is a form of quest.

The quest for happiness, the search for coherence with oneself, the reunion with one's interior "House" as Clarrissa Pinkola Estés so tenderly calls it.

Sometimes only life upheavals come to remind us of how this is happening here and now.

Not elsewhere ...

In June 2015, when Eugenie learned that she had breast cancer, she asked me to do some portrait work.

The photographs presented here are the result of this joint journey which lasted two years (from August 2015 to September 2017).

The complexity of the being, its intrinsic history sometimes leads it to move away from its center, including its aspirations for happiness. The body, as for him, faithful to the internal states is the reflection of it. When the internal disruption is such that the death of the soul can follow, the body regains control and opens a breach that we have the choice to explore or not.

By choosing the path of exploration, it is possible to rediscover the link to our deep nature, that benevolent and filled with self-love.

Artist Talks with Katherine Longly - Hernie & Plume
